Just a quick reminder that school will be closed on Monday 19th September due to the state funeral of HMS Queen Elizabeth ll.
Unfortunately, we have had a number of staff test positive for Covid today. To try to restrict the spread they will be following the NHS recommendation and isolating for 5 days. Please can we ask that if your child is unwell, that you keep them at home and do not send them in having had Calpol. If they have a temperature, it could be a sign of having the virus. Please can they be kept off for the recommended 3 days to help minimise the spread. We are concerned that we will have a spike again with the return to school.
What a busy week we have had in Year R. The children have settled really well and are getting used to all the new rules and routines. They have met Indie the Independent Snow Leopard and have completed three independent jobs this week. They have also had lots of fun with Listening Len in phonics. We have been looking at number songs in maths, we have attached the link so they can share them with you at home. Counting songs - BBC Teach
The Year 1 children have settled well into their new classes and new routines. Each class found a letter with clues to find a treasure chest. The children were very excited! Ask them what was in the treasure chest! In maths the children have been counting objects to 10 and then 20 and matching amounts to numbers. The teachers have been very impressed with their knowledge. In Phonics the children have been re-introduced to Supersonic Phonics Friends. A newsletter about what they have been learning in phonics will be in their book bags each Friday with their reading book.
The words of the week are both and communication.
This week in Maths Year 2 have been partitioning two-digit numbers. Can your child tell you what partitioning means? The children partitioned numbers practically, pictorially and mentally. In English we learnt about nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs and conjunctions and we played some games to help us remember these important words. We also learnt about the similarities and differences between statements and questions. We started our rainforest topic by finding out where rainforests are located and we used atlases to locate the continents on our maps of the world. In PE we created a dance about the circus and in Music we learnt about long and short notes.
We are looking for some volunteers that may be able to commit to helping in school on a regular basis. This may be to get experience of working in school before completing childcare training or just because you have some spare time on your hands and would like to be involved in school life. You could help with the library, gardening, run small groups or help hear those children that don’t read at home. If you are interested in this, please email parent.mail@hwis.hants.sch.uk. We would need to initiate a DBS (safeguarding check).
Please can we remind you that scooters, bikes, footballs should not be played with/used on the playground before or after school. We had a near miss yesterday and are concerned that someone will get hurt in the busy environment during ‘drop off/pick up’. The children have been spoken to and know that the play equipment can only be used in school time.
We have been hearing that lots of children have started to ‘park and stride’ which is great. Remember that you are able to park at the Portsmouth Arms or community centre and then either walk or scoot in the rest of the way. Children will earn badges each month if they are taking part in this initiative. Please remember to park considerately as we have received some complaints from local residents. A final reminder, dogs are not permitted anywhere on site.
Please remember that we are a nut and shellfish free school due to allergies. Please do not include anything into your child’s lunchbox that contains these ingredients included chocolate spread/peanut butter. Many thanks for your understanding.
Have a lovely weekend and we will see you on Tuesday 20th September.

General News and Information:
If your child does not eat certain foods due to religion reasons or personal preference, please ensure they know what lunch option they are choosing every day before they come in to book it on the whiteboard. There have been a few occasions when children have inadvertently selected the wrong meal choice. Children with allergies are identified by wearing a different coloured wrist band and have their meals cooked according to their special menu.
HC3S have a parent portal where they can register children needing special allergy school dinner menus directly. This will give parents more control and direct contact with the catering team. You will then need to make an application online for your child to have a special menu and the school will be notified automatically. If you need to apply for a special menu, please see the information by clicking on: https://specialdiets.hants.gov.uk/
If your child has a change or existing or new medical condition, please inform us by completing the form which is now available on our website: New or Change to Existing Medical Condition Form
We continue to put our children, their parents and our staff at the centre of any decision making to ensure that we keep everyone as safe as we can at this continued tricky time. If you have any feedback as to how this week has been, please let us know via parent.mail@hwis.hants.sch.uk
