Music

Intent

At Hatch Warren infant school, we strive to deliver a rich music curriculum which has our school values embedded throughout the time children spend with us from Early Years to the end of Key Stage 1. We intend for children to listen to a wide range of music, from different genres across different eras and cultures, developing our school value of being respectful.  They should have plenty of opportunities to think critically about what they are listening to. It allows them to pick up key features of music which they can use later in their own music independently. By enabling them to listen to music from a wide span of periods, it gives them the opportunity to understand how music has developed and changed as a result of time. Children are also given plenty of activities that mean they compose their own music, meaning that they can be creative and explore their use of sounds. They can achieve this in individual performances and as part of a group promoting teamwork. We give children many opportunities to perform in our Music curriculum in order to build their confidence, whether it be a range of pre-composed songs which they can put their own adaptations onto or music which they have composed entirely on their own.

Implementation

We deliver our Musical Curriculum through the Get Set 4 Music scheme. Throughout the curriculum, our aims are embedded within the planning and opportunities are provided as part of our wider curriculum. The lessons build upon the children’s prior learning, and give children of all abilities the opportunity to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding. Progression is also planned throughout the school so children have the opportunities to further develop themselves as musicians as well as challenge themselves.

Within our whole class teaching, children experience a wide range of musical opportunities with regards to appraising, composing, and performing. They explore a wide range of music. As well as this, a love of music is promoted to include all of these skills from both children and staff. Music sessions are of a high quality, with well-informed staff who are confident to deliver well-structured sessions with correct terminology embedded within the teaching so that children are able to acquire accurate language surrounding Music.

Impact

Our children at Hatch Warren Infant School will have developed a love of Music, including composing and performing. Right away from starting with us in Reception in September until they leave us at the end of Year Two, children’s skills will have progressed, meaning they will have developed in line with the National Curriculums objectives. As well as this, they will have had opportunities to participate in a range of wider opportunities in Music through our after school clubs and other events scheduled throughout the year. Our children have a positive attitude towards Music, this is evident during lessons where pupils can be seen actively engaged and enjoying the well-structured activities that are not only developing their skill set but their appreciation of Music. By developing these attitudes and behaviours in sessions, we hope to see our children continue to progress in their Musical abilities and skills as they move onto the next Key stages of their learning.
