Reading and Phonics

At Hatch Warren Infant School, we put phonics and reading at the heart of all our learning. We provide daily phonics sessions that are fun and interactive. We currently follow a DfE approved systematic synthetic phonics teaching programme called Supersonic Phonic Friends, this is used across the school from Year R through to the end of Year 2.

www.supersonicphonicfriends.co.uk

Supersonic Phonic Friends combines stimulating lessons, vibrant illustrations and characters and engaging classroom materials to provide a simultaneous visual, auditory and kinaesthetic approach to the development of early reading. In Reception, the children work through ‘The Basics’ 2, 3 and 4, in Year One the children focus on ‘The Higher Levels’ Choose To Use and Switch It Mitch and in Year Two the children focus on Spelling rules. Throughout the scheme children learn Tricky Tess words (also known as tricky or common exception words).

All of the schools reading scheme provides a direct match to the Supersonic phonic Friends scheme to ensure that all books given to the children are accessible and only covering sounds the children have learnt so far in class. The scheme is a combination of books from multiple schemes including ‘Big Cat Phonics’ and ‘My Letters and Sounds’. Once children are confident readers with ‘The Higher Levels’, attention turns to fluency and comprehension and children return to our banded reading scheme.

At Hatch Warren Infant School, our goal is to deliver a high quality and engaging English curriculum that develops a love for reading, writing and speaking and listening. Through the teaching of English, we are equipping children with key life skills enabling them to communicate effectively in a range of both spoken and written forms across all subjects and contexts.

In writing, the use of high-quality text drivers and first-hand experiences mean the children are immersed in a vocabulary rich learning environment, which ensures the curriculum expectations are met. Using a well-planned sequence of English lessons, children are supported to become independent writers, guiding them to draw on their knowledge of phonics, grammar and reading. Lessons are planned using Greg Bottrill’s ‘Drawing club’ approach and the Hampshire Learning Journey model where the children are given ample opportunities to acquire new skills in their writing and produce outcomes for a range of audiences and purposes.
