Attendance and Achievement
All children aged 5 - 16 have to receive a fulltime education.
Parents and carers have to make sure this happens.
This is the law!
Reporting Absences
You are asked to inform the school by 10.00am on the first day of absence, when your child is ill. It is important that we know the reason for any absence from school.
A child who has had diarrhoea and/or sickness during the night should not attend school for 48 hours.
For more information regarding illnesses and the length of time a child needs to be away from school please refer to the Health Protection for Schools, nurseries and other childcare facilities provided by the Health Protection Agency.
Raise your child's attendance......Raise their chances
Most parents want their children to succeed - a good education is vital in securing opportunities in adulthood. If a school can improve attendance by 1%, they will see a 5-6% improvement in attainment (DfES). Please help us and your child by ensuring their attendance remains above 95%, allowing them to achieve their potential.
June 2024
Formal testing period for Phonics (Years 1 & 2) – It is vital that children are present in school during this time.
Does 90% attendance sound good?
That missing 10% actually means 1/2 a day missed every week. No employer would be happy with that! The Department for Education and Skills research suggests that if your child is 15 minutes late each day, it would add up to 2 weeks of missed lessons over the course of a year.....17 missed school days a year can mean a GCSE grade DROP in achievement. The greater the attendance the greater the achievement. That's a fact!
If you child is late, they can often miss the important things for the day that the teacher has told the children first thing. Your child will then have to find out what the other children are doing, which can also disturb the other children already in class.
Occasional absences
Occasional absences can rapidly build up. Try to stay strict on even infrequent absence, and show your child that attending school is a priority to you and is key to their future success.
We need to know....
Whenever a child is absent from school please contact us on the first day of absence by 10am with an explanation.
You are not alone
Talk to us......we may be able to help support you and your child.
If your child misses school, they miss out on lots of things that are going on in school, they miss time with their friends and they miss out on their learning, which they can then struggle to catch up with.
The law
Amendments have been made to the 2006 regulations in the Education (Pupil Registration) (England) (Amendment) Regulations 2013. The amendments make it clear that from September 2013, Headteachers may not grant any leave of absence during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances.
