History
Intent
Our History curriculum aims to give our children a broad and balanced view of the History of Britain, other societies and how they compare and contrast. Throughout the topics, children will develop a well-rounded knowledge of the past and improve their understanding of the world around them and their own heritage. Our goal in this subject is to develop children’s Historical skills and motivate their interest in the subject through engaging activities, trips and visitors, give them the opportunity to ask questions and be inspired by the past. Our planned topics have been crafted to inspire the children and develop a love and curiosity for History whilst nurturing their abilities to pursue areas and topics of their own interest.
Implementation
Our programme of study from Reception through to Key Stage one develops children’s chronological understanding, knowledge and understanding of events, people and changes in the past, interpretations and enquiry. These skills can be tracked through our topics; children are given many opportunities to build on these and apply them throughout their education with us. We ensure that children have multiple chances to learn and progress each of the skills concerned with History. We feel that this creates a secure foundation of skills and knowledge that children can then take with them as they progress onto their next stages of learning about their past in Key Stage Two.
Impact
Throughout the subject, it is intended that the children should become increasingly critical and analytical within their own thinking. They should be able to make informed and balanced judgements based on their knowledge of the past. They will become increasingly aware of how historical events have shaped the world that they currently live in. Children will have developed their enquiry skills to pursue their own interests within and topic and take on their own further questioning.
Moving forward with their education, the should be able to retain their prior-learning and explicitly make connections between what they have previously learnt and what they are currently learning.
