Geography

Intent

Throughout our Geography curriculum, we plan to inspire children’s curiosity and interest to explore the world we live in and its people, which aims to ignite a love of learning. We intend to equip children with Geographical skills to develop their knowledge through studying places, people, natural and human environments. The topics seek to deepen the understanding of the Earths human and physical forms and its processes. This subject, by nature, is an investigative one. Through our teaching, we intend to provoke though, questions and encourage children to discover answers to their own lines of enquiry through exploration and research. This enables our children to gain a greater understanding and knowledge of the world and their place in it.

Implementation

At Hatch Warren Infant School, we want to foster children’s curiosity about the world along with their interest and creativity. Geography is taught through a skills based curriculum that can be tracked from Reception through to Year 2. Throughout their time with us, the children will develop and expand their Geographical skills multiple times throughout the different topics. Adults delivering the topics are encouraged to consider opportunities to use the school’s grounds and surrounding areas for fieldwork. This enables children to base their learning on first hand experiences to enhance teaching and learning in Geography.

Impact

By the end of Year 2, it is expected that children will have developed their knowledge and understanding of all the skills set out in Key Stage One. Children will have developed Geographical knowledge and skills to help them explore, navigate and understand the world around them and their place in it. Children’s knowledge and skills will develop progressively as they move through the school , not only to enable them to meet the requirements of the National Curriculum but to prepare them to become  competent Geographers throughout their education and lives.
