Meet the Governors
Meet the Governors - Who are they and what do they do?

The school has a Governing Body, which plays an important role, working to support the Head Teacher and oversee the success of the school.
Governors are volunteers, appointed for a 4-year term, committed to ensuring Hatch Warren Infant School provides the best possible educational experience for its pupils. We want all children to achieve their best in an open and positive environment where they feel safe, have a sense of belonging, and are able to thrive.
At Hatch Warren Infant School our governors include representatives from the local authority, school staff, parents and other volunteers from the local community, bringing a range of skills to support the school from a variety of different backgrounds. Our Chair of Governors is Karen Wills.
Governors are often in school, formally and informally keeping in touch with all aspects of school life. They are happy to discuss any queries you may have and welcome feedback from parents.
All Governors can be contacted via the School Office.
How are the Governors appointed?
The Governing Body of Hatch Warren Infant School consists of 12 people:
- Elected parents (4)
- Elected school staff (1)
- Headteacher (1)
- Co-opted (5)
- Representative appointed by the Local Authority (1)
When vacancies occur for parent governors, nominations are invited from parents and an election is held. All parents are entitled to vote in those elections.
Vacancies for Co-opted governors are advertised within the local community and recommendations made by the Chair of the Governors and Head Teacher to the Governing Body for approval.
If you are interested in applying to become a school governor or want to find out more, please make contact by emailing parent.mail@hwis.hants.sch.uk.
More information about the role of a Governor
Governors are appointed or elected to work alongside the Headteacher to help develop the long-term strategic direction and ethos of the school, ensure the best possible educational performance of the school and safeguard the school’s finances. The relationship between the Governing Body and the Headteacher is one of support and challenge, ensuring the school is managed effectively and barriers to success are identified and removed.
Governors support the Head Teacher and Leadership Team to:
- Ensure the school’s provision enables every pupil to thrive
- Raise standards of education and care to improve the lives of all pupils and especially those who may be disadvantaged.
The full Governing Body meets together twice each term to discuss the following:
- The quality of provision for all children
- School policy reviews and updates
- Performance data that demonstrates whether targets are being met
- School Development Plans, aimed at continually improving the school
- How the school budget will be spent
- In-year school finances, year-to-date and projections
- Repair and maintenance of school buildings
- Long term plans and the future of the school
- The appointment and dismissal of senior staff
- Complaints from pupils, staff and parents
In addition, sub-committees meet to discuss some elements in more detail such as Finances, and Teacher and staff performance and pay (including the Head Teacher).
Governors undertake monitoring visits and feed their findings back to the Full Governing Body (including excellent practice as well as areas for improvement) on areas such as SEND provision, Safeguarding, Health & safety, Attendance, Data Protection as well as all aspects of the curriculum.
The role of Governors is important. They work in collaboration with the school to foster a culture of high expectation and professionalism, aiming to achieve a positive experience for all pupils.
